Name: Barnaby "Chance" Nicholas Reier
Age: 19 years
Gender: Male
Nationality: European (mixed descent)

Camp: Camp Coon
Rank: Hunter
Weapon: Dagger

Personality:
Cold - Stubborn - Unconfident - Caring - Passionate - Loyal - Expressive
Chance is, first and foremost, a cold, apathetic individual.  He doesn't bother to show much of his emotion, and even by nature has a somewhat limited ability to express his emotions outwardly.  He doesn't talk much, doesn't ever come across as particularly kind, and generally just avoids social interaction to the extent he can.  Simple matters of receiving his orders, etc., he 's fine with, but when it comes to "chatting around the water cooler," he'll pass.  He doesn't take well to the idea of any sort of friendly relationships with other people, and will often push them away - and romantic relationships are practically out of the question.

Additionally, he's beyond stubborn.  This shows in a number of ways - not only is he hotheaded and normally very strong in his beliefs, refusing to see things in a different way once he's formed his opinion, but he gets his mind set in certain things and refuses to pull it out.  When it comes to his leg and even his general health, he'll always insist that he's fine, and that anyone worrying about him is simply overreacting.  Even if he's very much caught in the act of needing help, odds are he will continue to deny it to hell, never one to admit to needing such, or to being wrong.

Despite being stubborn, he actually lacks a lot of confidence.  He struggles constantly with feelings of inadequacy, very much in part stemming from the way his father treated him, but also just with natural feelings of self-doubt.  He feels extreme guilt almost constantly, especially about Delilah's death, feeling as if he should've done more, or at the very least, shouldn't have run away when told, and instead stayed there and just died with her.  He doesn't even particularly try to build up his own self-esteem, and will often openly insult himself, and pass it off as some kind of joke.

Surprisingly enough, though, he's actually quite the caring individual.  He has a strong sense of humanity, and ultimately does feel the need to help those he thinks need it.  When it comes down to it, he wouldn't turn his back on anyone, not really.  Especially if you get close to him, he's actually quite affectionate, and will likely be constantly complimenting you and reassuring you of how much he cares, especially with the knowledge of how bad he is at showing that - of course, getting close to him in the first place is extremely difficult.

Chance is extremely passionate.  Again, he knows his beliefs and he's set in them, with very strong feelings about just about everything.  Ultimately, in this sense, he doesn't know grey area - he's almost always completely for or against something, nothing in between.  His emotions are fierce, his anger especially so, and he'll always fight for what he thinks is right.  At best, he's brave, prepared to jump into any situation to help someone who needs it - but at worst, he's rash, and tends to make decisions without thinking at all about the consequences.

Surprisingly, though, in the right mediums, Chance is quite expressive.  He has an interest in the arts, and when people aren't around, you can sometimes find him singing to himself.  He has an ear for music in general, and just about any beat will leave him at the very least tapping his foot out of reflex.  He even writes poetry, though it's highly doubtful that he would ever show it to people, considering all of it is either too sappy for his liking, or flat-out dark.  But in the end, while he struggles to express himself outwardly, these more introvert-oriented pass-times help him with that quite a bit.

History:
Chance was born as Barnaby in Camp Coon, to his mother and father.  Almost immediately upon birth he began showing signs of serious health complications, and within weeks had fallen terribly ill.  Everyone did all that they could to help him, but due to his weak body, survival seemed less and less likely as the days ticked on.  However, in the end he somehow managed to recover - some called it a "miracle," but that's the more sappy approach.  The young boy lived, however, though likely suffered from a bit of a stunted growth as a result of his tricky infant years.  The name "Chance" came about because of this incident, his mother nicknaming that after he'd survived through such pitiful odds.  While originally just his mother would occasionally call him that as a pet name, the name seem to stuck, even the boy himself taking a liking to it.

He was a quiet child, even in his younger years.  He often didn't want to play part in many of the games that the other children did, mainly due to a timid nature.  Though he'd recovered from his original illness, he continued to be a sickly child, and everyone was constantly watching him carefully to make sure he wouldn't harm himself somehow.  He managed to make a friend, a young girl named Delilah, and somewhat on his own, somewhat do to her help, he gained some confidence as he got older, as well as some strength, and eventually began coming out of his shell somewhat.  That being said, this only lasted so long.

He was about five when his mother was the one who fell ill.  Chance was hardly even allowed to visit her, for fear that he may catch whatever she had given his sickliness, and fear that if he did, he wouldn't have enough of a chance to fight it off.  However, not even his mother had the strength to fight it off, and died within a week of initially falling ill - Chance got one chance to visit her at any point in her sickness, and still feels a level of guilt for this.  This event was the catalyst to the nickname of "Chance" solidifying even further, and mention of any "Barnaby" fellow was seldom.

Meanwhile, there was Chance's father.  Throughout his son's younger years he wasn't particularly present, often very preoccupied by his work as a Guide.  And, admittedly, while he made a great mentor, he didn't make as good of a father - while he wasn't necessarily cruel to Chance in his earlier years, he simply wasn't around much, and when he was, he was cold and tended to ignore his son a bit, especially bothered by the child's health issues.

Upon the death of Chance's mother - and his father's wife - his attitude changed, and not in a good way.  While before he'd simply not been present, he now turned to more forms of cruelty - and while nothing was physical, there was an emotional component that was a lot for the boy to handle.  His father would openly reject him, turning away when asked for help, never giving him attention and punishing him if he went searching for it.  Chance had a period when he would desperately try to gain his father's approval, and it did horrible things to his self-esteem, things that can still be felt to this day.  He longed for the day he'd be able to train to become a Hunter, for hopes that he'd be able to prove his worth.

Delilah, who was still close to him, was primarily the one who helped him through this, even as the death of his mother and the subsequent rejection by his father caused him to revert back into his shell.  He became cold, as well as much more irritable, beginning to lash out at people, even when they were only trying to help him.  This was around when he took on the tendency to ignore his own pain, rather than to seek out help for it.  However, Delilah stayed with him, not planning on abandoning her friend so quickly, and the two continued to become closer.

Apprenticeship and his earlier teenage years were a rough time for Chance, as they are for anyone.  He began struggling with mood shifts which have continued on even now, and the upward spiral of his health ceased.  While it didn't regress, he remained weak and somewhat sickly, much to his disdain.  Especially while he was training, still desperately trying to prove himself both to the camp and to his father still, he had a tendency to get himself hurt, or be sick, and of course do nothing about it, instead continuing to train or whatever it was he was doing, and he was constantly landing himself under the care of the medic, to the point it was even a bit of a running joke among the camp.

He and Delilah remained close, and - as one could, quite frankly, expect - as their relationship transitioned to their teenage years with them, feelings of friendship turned into more than that.  She had a tendency to be one of the few people who could make him smile, make him laugh, and he was a support to her, as well.  These mutual feelings for each other led to them becoming a couple during this period, the rare type of teenage romance that actually had the grounds to last.

But, of course, it didn't.

Being roughly the same age, the two of them "graduated" around the same time.  Chance no doubt looked to his father somewhat, but by then, rather than Chance trying to please them, the two of them had distanced, despite still living together - and even then, Chance often stayed over at Delilah's home instead, preferring the welcoming atmosphere to the one of his own broken home.  Chance proved himself to be quite the capable Hunter, and despite his health problems, he was resourceful, and what he lacked in physical strength he made up for in sheer determination.

Chance and Delilah made the decision to head out of camp at one point, just to talk and see each other ("see each other"), without anyone else having to be around.  They did it a bit later in the evening, thinking they would have some time before the Beasts came out, but admittedly the two of them got a bit carried away, and before they knew it, the sun was down.  It wasn't long before an attack came, with a Beast launching itself straight at Delilah right as they were getting up to leave.  She did her best to fight it off, but ultimately, the Beast had the upper hand, having caught her off-guard.  Within seconds, Chance threw himself into the fray, doing everything he could to get the Beast off of his best friend ("best friend"), but in some stroke of bad luck finding himself still outmatched.  One Beast turned into two, and very quickly Delilah was easily injured to the point she had no chance of survival.  However, Chance continued going at the creatures, hoping desperately he'd be able to get her back to camp in time.

Chance himself got hurt badly, but in the end was spared fatal injury.  Delilah screamed at him to just leave her, and with some coaxing, he finally did.  He managed to escape back to camp,  wounded, but alive, but knowing that not far behind him, his love was being violently torn apart.  He only was able to offer a very brief explanation before he passed out, and woke up again under the care of the Medic.

He recovered for the most part, though serious damage had been done to his right leg, and while they did their best, full recovery was soon realized to be impossible.  He retains scars over many parts of his body, including his face, arms, and torso, along with a permanent limp.  Ultimately, though, the more lasting damage came from the death of Delilah - feelings of grief, anger, and guilt overtook him.  Any attempts at consoling him not only failed, but were normally met with an angry response for them to just leave him alone.

Life went on.  He continued his work as a Hunter, though struggled somewhat to do so with his newfound handicap - however, he found a way to manage it, and remains nearly as capable as any hunter, especially with his knack for the rank in general.  He remains cold and unopen, overly hesitant to get close to anyone, especially romantically.

Roleplay Example:
Chance really didn't much like the rain.  Now, if he was allowed to just stay inside the whole time, he'd likely love it, as the sounds in themselves were calming, soothing.  Yet, being out in it, admittedly it wasn't anywhere close to as enjoyable, as all it did was soak him.  It would make his leg ache, a dull ache that could easily turn to a searing pain if he stepped on it wrong.  Each step in itself hurt it enough - there was no need to make it even worse.  He stepped out of his home with a yawn, glancing around, bracing himself for another long day.

Miscellaneous:
  • His leg causes him almost constant pain.
  • He has a low immune system.
  • He's embarrassed by his birth name.
  • He has a deep, rugged voice, with a tendency to crack even as he's aged.
  • He's allergic to some of the materials in certain healing remedies.
  • When he smiles, it appears slightly lopsided.
  • He's really skinny and actually has a bit of difficulty gaining weight.
  • Before he hurt his leg, he was an exceptional runner.
  • His health suffers quite a bit during the winter, but he'll never admit it.
